Sports
Five doubles teams representing the Vineyard Tennis Center traveled to Falmouth Sports Center to compete in a ladies doubles team competition on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The competition was fierce.
Perhaps exhausted by the choppy ferry ride, the Island team of Doreen Rezendes and Merle Lincoln fell short in a second set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-7.
Super Bowl Swimmers
All set for the history-making sporting event on Sunday? That’s right, Sunday is when the young swimmers who make up the Makos, the swim team at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard, take on the Marshfield Swim Club team in their first competition swim meet.
The Makos’ inaugural races are scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the facility across from the regional high school. Some swimmers from the high school team, who have already competed in their first home meet, will also participate.
The Holmes Hole Sailing Association will be docking at the Wharf Restaurant in Edgartown on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. for their annual dinner. A spot at the table needs to reserved by Feb. 10.
Leading this sail to the stomach will be newly elected Commodore Dan Culkin.
On the menu will be prime rib, salmon or grilled chicken. Sides will include mashed potatoes, spinach, chowder and salad.
The cost for the evening is $40. All supporters are invited to attend.
It may have been the coldest day on the Vineyard in five years, but the warmest place to be on Monday afternoon was the pool inside the new YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard in Oak Bluffs. The heated aquatics center was an echo chamber of energy as the Vineyard high school swim team took to the blocks for the first home meet in 40 years.
Many considered it a historic moment as the first swimmers hit the pool for the first event — 25-yard freestyle — against the Blue Hills Technical School from Canton.
Yoga for Arthritis
A yoga for arthritis class begins on Monday, Jan. 31 and continues on Mondays and Fridays for four weeks.
The class is designed to help one move more freely, improve balance and increase range of motion with simple yoga alignment techniques. This yoga practice is suitable for anyone and can even be done while seated.
Classes will be taught by Jane Norton and held at the Yoga Collective at Island Cohousing Complex at 11 Rock Pond Road in West Tisbury.
Health Insurance
Massachusetts law limits when state residents can buy health insurance. The law applies to individuals and families buying health insurance on their own, outside of an employer’s plan or government-subsidized program. People in this group will have two opportunities to buy health insurance in 2011: Jan. 1 to Feb. 15, and July 1 to August 15. People who are uninsured and need health insurance now are advised to act soon in order to meet the Feb. 15 deadline.
