Shark Bite
The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks continue to beef up their lineup.
Recently, they signed pitchers David Bergin and Noah Piard, third baseman Anthony Boix and outfielder Sam Munson, all from Tennessee Wesleyan College. Sean Ryan, an outfielder from Wheaton College, who previously played for Shark’s Coach Ted Currle at Norton High School in Massachusetts, has also come aboard.
Eighteen-year-old Nicole Level, one of Mexico’s top junior windsurfers from Cancun, is alive today because of the quick thinking of 13-year-old Rasmus Sayre from Vineyard Haven.
The rescue took place last Saturday during a world-class windsurfing championship in Cozumel. The young teenage female sailor was found adrift amid four and five-foot seas, far offshore, without her board and not wearing a life jacket. Mr. Sayre happened to notice her while racing in a tight competition, and without hesitating he left the highly competitive race to make the rescue.
If coach Michael Joyce’s varsity boys’ basketball team hopes to make any noise in the state tournament in the coming weeks it will likely come down to which team shows up: The one that went into halftime against Norton on Wednesday with their tails between their legs down 38-19, or the second half team whose stifling press and relentless intensity on offense earned them a thrilling 70-61 victory in their last game of the regular season.
It must have been some half-time speech.
Health Fair
The annual Martha’s Vineyard Health Fair takes place Saturday, March 12 from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be screenings and exhibits designed to increase awareness about health issues, promote healthy lifestyles and highlight all of the health services and medical programs available on and off the Island.

Let’s Move
Let’s Move Martha’s Vineyard, a community health initiative funded through the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and the Farm Neck Association, will be starting a free, small pilot program that will run for three months from March 13 to June 12. The committee invites people who may be concerned about their weight and that of a child to contact us. The committee plans to assemble 10 teams of three people who are concerned about their weight.
New Year’s resolutions seem to come at the wrong time. It’s the middle of a dark and dreary Island winter. Who wants to turn over a new leaf when just smiling seems to require an extra burst of energy?
But how about a spring resolution? The sun is getting friendlier, feeling a bit warmer and not retiring to bed so early. Crocuses will be pushing their way into the party soon. It’s just easier to embrace a change of direction when birdsongs rather than cold north winds wake us from our slumber.
