Anyone interested in learning more about ticks and tick-borne illnesses should mark their calendars for Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. On that evening the Vineyard Haven Public Library is holding a forum entitled Island-Wide Boards of Health: How to Protect Yourself from Tick-Borne Illnesses.
The Martha’s Vineyard Family Center allergy support group is presenting a program entitled Living With Allergies: One Family’s Experience with Christine and Mark Mulvey.
On Monday at the first day of practice for the Mini Kickers program of Martha’s Vineyard Youth Soccer, a coach explained to his four and five-year-old players that there would be eighth graders on the field. “Eighth graders!” one youngster said in a hushed tone, conveying both awe and misunderstanding. “We have to play eighth graders? That’s hard.” Practice proved to be remarkably easy though.
There were winning golfers — four, to be exact. But the real winners at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club fall golf tournament, held Sept. 8 at the Edgartown Golf Club, were the children and families of the Vineyard.
The annual golf tournament, now in its 28th year, raised just over $9,000 to support the Boys and Girls Club’s affordable youth programs, most notably the club’s after-school program, which is open to all Island youth in grades K-6 for an annual membership fee of just $20.

The late giant in the Vineyard Haven sailing community was certainly present in spirit for the 35th running of the annual George Moffett Race last Saturday, when a robust fleet of sailboats turned out in weather that was even more robust to race in a 20-mile course from East Chop to Falmouth to Oak Bluffs to Edgartown and back. In the end, all agreed — it was a memorable day of sailing in nearly every way.
The commercial Northeast groundfish fishery Thursday was formally declared a disaster for the coming year by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, paving the way for financial assistance for fishermen who are facing depleted stocks and drastic cuts to catch shares.
The disaster declaration comes less than a month after Gov. Deval Patrick and other elected officials wrote a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce asking for federal disaster relief, citing a preliminary report predicting extreme cuts in catch limits for the 2013 fishing season, which begins in May 2013.
