The bay scallop season is set to open in Edgartown for family scallopers on Oct. 1.
Acting on the recommendation of the shellfish committee and shellfish constable Paul L. Bagnall, the Edgartown selectmen approved dates for the scalloping season on Monday. Recreational scalloping begins Oct. 1, with all areas open and a limit of one 10-gallon wash basket per week.
On Thursday the largest striped bass caught so far in this year’s 67th Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby was weighed in. Peter (Pete) J. Spengler, 75, of Cuttyhunk and Westport, Conn., caught his fish at 9:05 a.m. aboard Capt. Duane Lynch’s boat.
Dozens of kids and parents arose before dawn Sunday morning to take part in the annual Kids Derby, a featured event of the 67th Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. The contest is open to youngsters 4 to 14, and takes place at the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority docks.
Both soccer teams play at home this week, with the boys taking on Bishop Stang on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and the girls playing Mashpee on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Paul Curran, 48, of Vineyard Haven, won the Pat West Gaff Rig Race last Saturday. Mr. Curran was sailing his 32-foot wooden Bahamian smack called Mary Eleanor. Mr. Curran is a long-time figure on the waterfront, along with his boat and his first mate and co-owner Jill Walsh.
“It is so good Paul won,” Mr. Lobdell said afterwards.
The Vineyard Nursing Association has announced the hire of a new, full-time physical therapist. Eric M. Gordon, PT, is the founder and CEO of the Gordon Institute for Human | Sports Performance, and a physical therapist practitioner for 20 years.
