Oak Bluffs police last Wednesday arrested a naked and highly intoxicated man who reportedly stole a motor vehicle and a bicycle, broke into several parked cars and tried to break into a residence along Ocean Park, frightening the mother and young daughter who lived there.

Robert J. Robinson, 27, of Haverill, was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, four counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, vandalism, larceny over $250, unarmed burglary and lewd and lascivious behavior.

West Tisbury police this week reported that the money stolen during a nighttime burglary of Alley’s General Store and nearby Garcia’s Deli last month has been returned.

Sgt. Dan Rossi said the money was returned by an anonymous third party, not believed to be responsible or involved in the nighttime burglaries of August 18. Mr. Rossi said the unnamed person contacted the person or persons who allegedly robbed the two stores and persuaded them to return the money.

Sergeant Rossi said the investigation is ongoing and arrests are still possible.

Edgartown police arrested a Cambridge man on Sunday after he reportedly ignored signs prohibiting swimming at South Beach due to rough surf and ignored repeated verbal warnings from lifeguards and police to exit the water. John T. Waring, 37, was charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Gov. Deval Patrick gave an official order Friday morning to close South Beach due to impending 15 to 20 foot swells created by Hurricane Bill, which moved up the Atlantic Ocean well east of the Vineyard late Saturday night.

West Tisbury police are investigating a pair of burglaries early Tuesday morning at Alley’s General Store and Garcia’s Deli next door in which thieves broke into the buildings and stole a large amount of cash. The thieves stole only large denominations, leaving behind all of the $1 bills.

West Tisbury police Sgt. Dan Rossi said the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made. Police believe the two burglaries were committed by the same person or persons.

Armed Robbery Charges

Oak Bluffs police earlier this month arrested two young men who reportedly robbed a taxi driver at knife point and then made off with approximately $150 in cash.

Demetrio Garcia, 17, of Oak Bluffs, was arraigned in Edgartown district court on August 7 on charges of armed robbery, assault to rob while armed and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. A plea of not guilty was automatically entered on Mr. Garcia’s behalf.

An aerial drug sweep of the Island this month by the Massachusetts State Police and federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) task force found 169 illegal marijuana plants. Authorities are still investigating who planted the crops and have yet to make any arrests or issue summonses.

“There will be charges, maybe this week,” said state police Sergeant Jeff Stone, also head of the Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force. “But as of right now the investigation is ongoing.”
