In October 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee decided the easiest way to grab headlines was to scare the country.
When the Gazette went to press on Thursday of last week the news had been received shortly before that “The armistice had been signed and hostilities had been called off.” Immediately Edgartown, like all the rest of the country, started in to jubilate.
I usually mentally prepare myself for Nov. 9 each year by taking the day off and escaping somewhere. This year when the day came, I was overwhelmed with work.
