Opinion
I believe the American Civil War monument in Oak Bluffs should be left intact.
The historic Mill House in Vineyard Haven overlooking the lower entrance to the harbor has been torn down.
From the May 4, 1962 edition of the Vineyard Gazette:
Martha’s Vineyard is a place of landmarks, not of importance for the most part but of significance to those who know them, or perhaps it is more correct to say, to those who once knew. For the great majority of such landmarks have been forgotten, this majority lying off the main-tavelled ways.
The debate about the infield of the track at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is not about whether we should have grass or synthetic turf.
The daffodils have been brilliant this year, from the earliest tiny jonquils to the sturdy yellow standard types that bloom in great profusion along Island roadsides.
Debate over the Civil War statue in Oak Bluffs is turning into something of its own civil war, and it’s time the selectmen showed some leadership.
