Student Honors
Julia S. MacNelly of West Tisbury, a member of the class of 2009 at Phillips Academy in Andover, has been named to the honor roll at the school for the winter term. Phillips Academy, better known as Andover, is known for its extensive and rigorous academic program.
Joseph Arrives
Mary Bergeron and Joseph Medeiros 4th of West Tisbury announce the birth of a son, Joseph Medeiros 5th, born on May 16 at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. Joseph weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces at birth.
Dean’s List
Benjamin J. Gunn, the son of Mary Lou McCarthy of Vineyard Haven, has been named to the dean’s list at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, N.H.
The South Mountain Company in West Tisbury has tied for 10th place on a list of best adoption-friendly workplaces in America, which was released Thursday, May 1.
South Mountain ranked high on the list because of the generous benefits it provides for employees: $10,000 and up to four weeks paid leave per adoption. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption compiled and released the list.
MYSTIC SEAPORT, Conn. — A 60-foot Eastern dragger named Roann, a living example of Vineyard maritime history, was relaunched under sunny skies here last Saturday.
The Roann is the last of an era. No one makes fishing boats like this anymore.
The restoration of the Roann cost $1.2 million, lasted three and a half years, and involved a team of 50 boat builders, aided by another 50 volunteers. Mystic Seaport Museum, the owner of the Roann, organized the restoration of the vessel at its on-site shipyard.
