Frost Biters Conclude

Spring Sailing Season

The Frost Biters and Winter Guys concluded their successful spring sailing season June 19. Six boats turned out on a beautiful night.

With winds from the southwest at six to eight knots, the sailors raced from Nun 6 in the Harbor, around Can 23A off East Chop, then across the Harbor to Nun 4 off West Chop, and finished back at Nun 6.

Tom and Laura Welch finished first in Eastaway and Dan Culkin placed second in Magic Time. A guest boat, Aired, finished third.

The ninth annual fluke derby run by the Veterans of Foreign War Post in Oak Bluffs 9261 may be Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13, just over a week away, but anglers are already out there harvesting the fish. July is fluke season for most anglers.

Tennis Center Change

Ken Martin, co-founder of the Vineyard Tennis Center, Workout and Spa, is stepping aside in the coming weeks after a 12-year partnership with Connie McHugh. Ms. McHugh will then assume full ownership.

Mr. Martin designed and has maintained the tennis and health club facility since 1996. His vision and direction have resulted in the club receiving the “Best of the Vineyard” award for four consecutive years.

He will continue to be an active tennis player and fitness member.

Chris Rasmussen moved with more purpose, weaving through the dapper group, making sure everything was in the right place.

A power boat exiting Lake Tashmoo Sunday afternoon sustained heavy damage after it collided with a sailboat also exiting the narrow channel. Nobody was injured in the collision and both vessels were brought safely back into the harbor, although the power boat sustained extensive damage to its hull above the water line.

Tisbury harbor master Jay Wilbur said the 30-foot motor boat Sally Forth was exiting the harbor when it ran head-first into the 22-foot sailboat Beer Nuts. The sailboat was under full sail at the time of collision and had the right of way.

Almost exactly two years after its last defeat in the state legislature, a proposal to impose a one per cent tax on the sale of higher-cost homes to pay for affordable housing on the Vineyard is again set to go before the House.

Two separate bills — one relating to the Vineyard and the other to Nantucket — were approved by the Senate last Tuesday night, giving renewed hope to affordable housing advocates.
