Announcing Julia
Anne and Glen Caldwell of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a daughter, Julia Marie Caldwell, on July 14 at the Martha’s Vineyard Community Hospital. Julia weighed 6 pounds, 13.6 ounces at birth. She is also welcomed by big sister Samantha.
Martha’s Vineyard Community Services has been awarded a 3-year accreditation, the highest level possible, by CARF International, an independent not-for profit organization that accredits human service providers.
The process began in 2006 and was completed in May of 2008. In a letter received from CARF on June 30, Community Services was recognized for its “dedication and commitment to improving the quality of the lives of the persons served . . . . Services, personnel, and documentation clearly indicate an established pattern of practice excellence.”
Mary and Jackson Kenworth said this week that they are working on a scaled-down plan to rebuild the former Deon’s restaurant in North Tisbury.

Cottagers’ History Program
The Oak Bluffs Historical Commission will sponsor a program depicting the history of the Cottagers, Inc. in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday, July 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Library meeting room.
Twelve years ago, Marian Halperin of Vineyard Haven began reading and copying the private journal of someone she didn’t know. Then she read and copied the letters he wrote far from home and the account book his father kept on the Island while he was away.
Chilmark police responded to a high number of motor vehicle and moped accidents over the past week, including a two-vehicle accident on Middle Road on Thursday that sent six people to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Chilmark police chief Timothy Rich said the accident occurred just after 10 p.m. near the intersection of Tabor House Road when a 2005 Subaru Legacy driven by seasonal resident Donald Leopold, 18, crossed the center line and collided with a 1999 Volvo Station carrying seven occupants.
