Connected. Privileged. Honored. Thankful. Full.

Those were a few of the words the Chilmark School fourth and fifth grade class used in their class blessing at the school’s community lunch Friday afternoon. The lunch was the last of the school year in a series of gatherings organized by Island Grown Schools and volunteers.

Brian Weiland is with the band.

Exactly which band is highly variable.

Determining the band or for that matter the instrument Mr. Weiland plays is a little like a game of musical Mad Libs. Drums with The Daytrippers, a Beatles cover band. Mandolin with The Flying Elbows strings group. Guitar with Apocalypso, a self-described CalypsoRock band. Hammered dulcimer with the Misfits of Avalon, a traveling Irish-Celtic ensemble.

We aren’t planning anything,” says John McCauley, Deer Tick’s founder, frontman and principle songwriter, regarding the band’s Monday night show at Flatbread in Edgartown. “But everything is possible.” He laughs, clearly aware that his last trip to Martha’s Vineyard was filled with plenty of mayhem and misadventure, including missed planes and going missing.

Dancehall reggae legend Barrington Levy performs tonight, June 7, at Dreamland in Oak Bluffs.

Mr. Levy’s particular style is a blend of old and new coming out of the transition occurring in reggae music as he began his rise to fame in the late 1970s. More traditional roots reggae featured mellower rhythms and a fiercely activist message. Listeners now wanted faster beats and a more dance-oriented style of music, which coincided with major developments in digital music technology. Enter Mr. Levy with his traditional roots rhythms and a harder dancehall edge.

David Rhoderick is a professional musician. He is also a mainframe evangelist for IBM. These may seem like two completely different skills, but to Mr. Rhoderick, both jobs are like chord progressions, they harmonize.

Mr. Rhoderick is the organist at the West Tisbury Congregational Church, a job he secured in April after acting as the church’s interim music director this past winter.

On Sunday June 2 at 4 p.m. the West Tisbury Congregational Church will host a concert featuring Mr. Rhoderick and the church choir.
