Dining
If a group of West Tisbury restaurateurs are successful the town may join Tisbury and Aquinnah in the ranks of the Island’s formerly dry towns.
It’s been a long time since West Tisbury residents have been able to imbibe at a local establishment. In the mid-19th century, proprietor Sanderson Manter Mayhew held a license for the sale of rum at what is now Alley’s General Store, but for a century and a half West Tisbury has been dry.
Etiquette questions abound as the 25th anniversary of the MVY Radio Big Chili Contest draws near.
There may be no sterling silver flatware (we’re guessing plastic or biodegradable) nor any silver-framed photos of the happy couple (though it was there that MVY program director PJ Finn met his wife, a multiple-time winner of the chili contest’s T-shirt design contest before winning his heart). So formalities are at a minimum. But is it really okay to make a complete mess of yourself at such an occasion?
Erin Go Bragh
They are not in Ireland yet, but it’s the next best thing this Wednesday night at Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs.
Students of Irish history at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School are raising money for their trip in February.
The night includes a feast of all things Irish: Leek and potato soup, smoked salmon and Irish brown bread, and Irish stew. For dessert there is chocolate stout cake with Bailey’s frosting. Seatings are at 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living held the first in a series of five cultural luncheons, this one featuring the Contributions and Influence of the Wampanoag, on Nov. 13 at the Grill on Main in Edgartown, with a meal including traditional foods carefully selected and prepared by chef Anthony Saccoccia and his staff to represent a traditional meal of the Wampanoag.
Tables were decorated with a floral arrangement by Ellen O’Brien. Those sitting at specially marked seats each won a bouquet at the end of the day.
You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Cantina
“Y’all know me. Know how I earn a living. I’ll catch this bird for you, but it ain’t gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin’ bluegills and tommy cods.”
And what bad fish are we talking about here? Points to the salty sea captain in the back. It’s Jaws of course, also known, when referring to the actual mechanical reproduction of the mythic monster, as Bruce.
Scallop Shucking
Consider the scallop this Saturday at the West Tisbury Winter Farmers’ Market. In addition to the great produce and local goods served up at the market, this weekend enjoy a scallop demonstration and shucking contest.
Shucking check-in is at noon. The shells start to come off at 1 p.m.
There will also be a video showing of Gail Tipton’s A Scallop Story from Spawn to Harvest.
