Spaghetti Dinner
Against the backdrop of a sustained national recession, the board of directors for the YMCA of the Martha’s Vineyard voted unanimously last Friday to begin construction on the long-awaited 38,000-square-foot YMCA building to be built across from the regional high school on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.
Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard will hold an Empty House Tour on Saturday, March 7, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Captain Mellon House, an 18th century whaling captain’s home, located at 105 Main street, the corner of Main street and Pease’s Point Way in Edgartown.
The public is invited to tour the house to see the “before” state of this historic home, which will undergo a complete makeover by Vineyard interior decorators and landscapers beginning on March 9.
Sheila Bracy, Executive Director of Women Empowered, stumbled on a unique idea for her March 8 fundraiser. “Zephrus is offering a wonderful opportunity for Women Empowered to celebrate International Women’s Day with its supporters and to raise money for our program.” Dinner this Sunday is open to the public, and 20 per cent of the proceeds go to Women Empowered.
This has been an interesting winter and perhaps one of the hardest things has been controlling all the pent-up energy of the young. The Edgartown Boys’ and Girls’ Club has been busy trying to do this, and succeeded one recent afternoon when the Martha’s Vineyard Model Flying Club came and flew in the gymnasium.
It was exciting as the little planes and a helicopter whizzed around overhead, trying not to bump into each other.
A strong Vineyard contingent turned out to help warm the new House of Blues in Boston last Saturday night. It was an old-home night of sorts, with singer-songwriter Carly Simon making an unscheduled appearance to dance and belt out a number on stage with Dan Akyroyd. Judy Belushi Pisano, a Vineyard Haven resident and widow of John, one of the original Blues Brothers, was a key mover in getting the Vineyard crowd to Boston — and on its feet. But truth to tell, few Islanders need much of an excuse to get off the rock in February.
