Estate Auction

An auction of estate items from several Vineyard homes will be presented by MV Auctions on Saturday, August 21 at 6 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, on State Road near Alley’s. The preview of fine antiques begins at 1 p.m. and the preview party with wine and cheese is set for 5 p.m.

There is no admission charge. Partial proceeds will be donated to Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard, providing simple, decent housing for Island families. For details, call 508-743-7955.

Hot Dog Heaven

Dinghy Dogs’ second annual Hot Dog Topping Contest is on: the deadline for bringing your recipes, pictures or descriptions of the top dog toppings to the Dinghy Dog House on the Oak Bluffs Harbor is August 24.

Bring your recipes, pictures, and/or descriptions down to Dinghy Dogs on the Oak Bluffs Harbor by Tuesday, August 24.

Sample the finalists’ dogs and cast your vote for this year’s winner on Friday, August 27. The winner will be announced that night.

Pyrotechnic Storm Hits Ocean Park

Did you know fireworks date back to seventh century China when they were used to scare away evil spirits? But that was just for the wealthy. The masses didn’t get their boom-boom on until the 14th century, thanks to the Ming dynasty’s populist embrace. Fast-forward to today and a beloved dynasty of another sort, the Oak Bluffs Fire Department, which is hosting its annual fireworks blastoff at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs.

Prominent Afghan businesswoman Hassina Sherjan, who owns the textile company Boumi and is coauthor of Toughing It Out in Afghanistan, will be among the notable women speaking at Empowering Afghan Women, a panel presentation to be held on Monday, August 23, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Let’s Dance!

Island Salsa will be represented at the Let’s Move Festival on August 24 in Waban Park in Oak Bluffs. From 1 to 1:15 p.m. there will be a demonstration followed by a brief introductory class with David Vanderhoop. There is no charge. The rain date is August 25. And it’s not too early to start planning for salsa classes this coming fall. Classes for beginners, advanced beginners and a salsa intensive are all planned, starting in October. An announcement with details will appear in a future edition of the Gazette.

Bring the family to the next Shearing Day celebration, when Island Alpaca Farm shears their newest alpaca babies, or cria, from their summer birthing season on Friday, August 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at the farm near the blinker.

In this fleece-to-fiber transition, observing expert shearers work their clippers through the baby alpacas’ fabulous fleece. Admission is $5 per person.
