It’s an annual rite of spring, the Chilmark Preschool celebration fundraiser. For those who haven’t attended, this is not just another face-painting, pony riding, food and gameapalooza. It is also the place to get your baby chicks.

Every year a great crop of young birds is on display. Kids get to pet the baby chicks and, if you’re that kind of parent, take them home and start setting up the coop.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center.

Hunger Banquet

On Thursday, April 14, the Vineyard Committee on Hunger will host an Oxfam Hunger Banquet in the cafeteria at the high school. This dinner is an opportunity to see up close, and in the very tangible way of a meal being served, what the disparity of incomes throughout the world looks like.

Family-to-Family Meals

The Vineyard Committee on Hunger is asking for donations for Island families in need this spring, in particular for Passover and Easter meals.

The cost to sponsor a family meal is $25 and includes 1 ham or turkey, 5 pounds of potatoes, 2 pounds of onions, 1 pound of carrots, 3 pounds of apples, 3 pounds of oranges, 1 bunch of celery, 1 dozen eggs and canned pineapple.

The meals will be distributed on Wednesday, April 13.

Brownie Sundaes

The Dairy Queen is open but that’s not the only place to get your ice cream groove on.

This Saturday, April 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. the Edgartown Brownie troop is hosting an ice cream social to benefit the American Red Cross Tsunami relief efforts for Japan.

Doing good while feeling good, it’s a win-win for everyone. Except maybe parents dealing with the after shocks of a sugar high. But that’s a small price to pay for helping those in need.

Curving for the Cure

During the month of April, Curves of Vineyard Haven will participate in the 13th annual Curves Food Drive to collect nonperishable food and cash donations to benefit the local food bank. Current members who make a $30 donation or an equivalent donation of food are eligible to receive a Curves reusable Food Drive grocery bag. From April 4 to 17, Curves will also waive the membership fee for new members who donate a bag of nonperishable food or make a minimum donation of $30.

Since it was signed 10 years ago, the state’s Community Preservation Act has seen more than $12 million spent on housing, historical preservation and conservation on Martha’s Vineyard. But now there is growing pressure for Vineyard towns to reconsider their commitment to the CPA.

On Tuesday this week, Tisbury selectmen voted to attach a question to this year’s ballot, asking voters whether they want to maintain the town’s current commitment to the program, wind it back, or drop out completely.
