A week ago more than 100 people from around the world beganarriving on the Vineyard. Most looked like regular folks, bearded or not, wearing jeans or skirts, sneakers and shoes. They could have been leaf peepers who took a wrong turn on their way to the Berkshires. But some wore flowing crimson robes, a visible sign that this group was up to something different.

More telling, though, was that they appeared more relaxed than most people. They didn’t pack as much stuff either.

On a recent Sunday morning, in a small office space near the Black Dog Bakery Cafe, Elder Aric Mullins and Elder Garret Rushforth sat with other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and listened to a sermon about temptation and making the right choices. Nearly a year ago, Elders Mullins (20) and Rushforth (19) left the stability and security of their homes in Indiana and Utah, respectively, to embark on a two-year mission.

The stories of Capt. Zeb Tilton and his coastal schooner Alice S. Wentworth have come alive again in North Tisbury. A replica of the famous 1905 schooner is on the Island, and she is only 32 inches long.

Richard T. Olsen commissioned the model not so much for himself, he said, but for his family, friends and the Vineyard community. Mr. Olsen is the grandson of the famous Vineyard Haven sailor.

Some of the sweet little shelter kittens have been adopted but there are seven left, with more expected in the next week or so. This is such a good example of why everyone should have their cats spayed or neutered. It is sad to see so many unwanted kittens end up at the shelter. Anyone who finds it difficult to pay to have their animal neutered should contact SPAY or PAWS for financial assistance. Call the shelter for information.
