Tisbury Nears Decision on New Town Hall Location

The future home of Tisbury’s consolidated municipal offices will be on either West William street or High Point Lane, depending on the Tisbury select board, which is scheduled to choose between the two locations Tuesday afternoon.

The future home of Tisbury’s consolidated municipal offices will be on either West William street or High Point Lane, depending on the Tisbury select board, which is scheduled to choose between the two locations Tuesday afternoon.

Mark McKevitz of Icon Architecture told the select board Oct. 7 that his firm reviewed more than 80 town-owned properties before settling on the finalists, a one-acre parcel at 66 High Point Lane and a four-acre site at 55 West William street.

Tisbury has for decades wanted to centralize its town offices under a single roof, and has contended with a lack of space, mold, and rodents in its current disparate buildings, leading to safety concerns.

Icon’s study of town facilities found that Tisbury needs just over 15,000 square feet of interior space for its combined offices and nearly 9,000 square feet for a new police station, Mr. McKevitz said.

“When you look at parking, zoning requirements, exterior storage [and] programmable space, we came to a conclusion very early on that a minimum of an acre would be needed for either a town hall and police department building or for a town hall project only,” Mr. McKevitz said.

Applying the one-acre filter knocked out all but a handful of town-owned properties, he said, and further study led to the selection of the High Point and West William sites as finalists.

Tisbury currently conducts municipal business at multiple sites including the town hall, beneath Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street; the public works, planning, building and health departments on High Point Lane; the police station downtown and the emergency services facility on Spring street, completed in 2012.

The town purchased 55 West William street in 2019 and demolished an existing house there in 2022, with the intention of consolidating municipal offices on the site.

The property, which was used most recently for construction trailers during the Tisbury School project, could accommodate the town offices but not the police station as well, Mr. McKevitz said.

The High Point Lane site offers room for both, complete with a separate entrance and sally port for the police department and storage space for SWAT equipment, Mr. McKevitz said.

His presentation from the Oct. 7 meeting, which includes conceptual sketches of both options, is posted at tisbury-town-hall-site-selection.org.

Tuesday’s select board meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in the emergency services building at 215 Spring street.

The agenda also includes a discussion of recent social media posts and public conduct by Tisbury planning board chair Casey Hayward, as well as a discussion of potential town policies governing social media and conduct.

They are planning a new police station, why not use the building now occupied by police for the new town hall?
