Summer reservations in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown harbors have exploded to record levels.
Online reservations opened Feb. 1 in Oak Bluffs and March 1 in Edgartown. Harbor masters in both towns told the Gazette this week they have been inundated.
“It’s the busiest booking season that I can remember,” Oak Bluffs harbor master Todd Alexander said.
In Edgartown, people started snapping up reservations as soon as they opened, harbor master Charlie Blair said.
“In the first hour we took over 1,000 reservations,” Mr. Blair said.
Vineyard Haven does not take advance reservations, harbor master John Crocker said. Online reservations in Menemsha Harbor open May 1.
In Oak Bluffs this year Mr. Alexander raised the rate by a dollar per foot to tie up a boat, but that hasn’t deterred anyone, he said. He said he had processed around 1,100 reservations since opening day, more than what he saw at the end of April last year. The harbor took roughly 700 reservations on opening day alone, nearly double the number seen in recent years.
“I’ve been doing it . . . for over 20 years and it’s never filled up this fast,” Mr. Alexander said.
He said every weekend in July and August is sold out, and weekdays are filling up fast.
“It’s just starting to spread beyond the weekends now,” Mr. Alexander said. “In the past, it would take up into June . . . before we got to this level.”
In Edgartown, the Fourth July weekend sold out almost instantly, Mr. Blair said.
“Less than five minutes,” he said.
Mr. Blair said he noticed an uptick during the end of June, which usually takes longer to fill up. He attributed that to the Edgartown Yacht Club moving up its annual race weekend.
“That move by the yacht club to have their big races in June is just tremendous for us,” Mr. Blair said. “By moving to June it’s made it much easier for the visitors because we have moorings available. We’re looking for a big weekend there.”
While reservations foretell a strong season, a humming harbor in Edgartown will depend on completion of the ongoing multi-million dollar reconstruction project at Memorial Wharf, Mr. Blair said.
“Memorial Wharf is the biggest deal that’s going on in the harbor. We have our fingers crossed that we’re going to be up and running here by Memorial Day,” he said.
Mr. Alexander said he suspects the strong bookings are partly pent-up demand.
“It must be the pandemic sort of being over and people dying to get out,” he said.
Mr. Blair concurred, and said there is palpable anticipation too in the business community this year.
“[Businesses are] hungry . . . it’s all connected, because people want to have a great time once they get here,” Mr. Blair said. “The whole ball game is going to change.”
He concluded:
“I think we’re going to get overrun with people, [but] I’m looking forward to it. What the heck. Business as normal, that’d be nice, and all the problems that come with it.”

When I hear we’re going to be
RH Lake TashmooWhen I hear we’re going to be “overrun with people” and that harbor reservations in OB and Edgartown are sold out, I shudder at what that news means for a place like Lake Tashmoo — which already attracts hundreds of party boats each summer that drop anchors, churn up eelgrass and pollute the small lake with their sewage. With our established harbors sold out, will we see a surge in Lake Tashmoo? Is it time to consider some level of regulation, maybe a moratorium on anchoring (like they did in Cape Pogue)? Could the harbor master instead install a limited number of moorings and require reservations? Lake Tashmoo is already a very fragile ecosystem and in danger of becoming toxic. It’s time we start taking steps to save the lake, rather than continuing policies that will eventually destroy it.
RH,
Bill OBRH,
The ocean belongs to all of us to enjoy…..sorry
I would say the opposite.
CM Vineyard HavenI would say the opposite. The oceans belong to no one.
Well said RH, Vineyard Haven
Eric Poehler Vineyard HavenWell said RH, Vineyard Haven BOS in conjunction with the Harbor Master must identify the ongoing problem by putting it on the agenda and make changes and vote on them to rectify an already bad situation which, is getting worse every year. We have witnessed on weekends the rafting of four boats or more in several areas near the opening. Last year two boats got caught by the tide and settled right on topped of an ell grass bed. Our town fathers should care for and look after our wonderful and sensitive public spaces be it on land or sea, so that generations to come may go rake for clams, cast their lines, play soft ball, sit on main street and watch the summer show while enjoying an ice-cream.
I work for the Tisbury
Nelson Sigelman Vineyard HavenI work for the Tisbury shellfish department and assist the harbor department on Lake Tashmoo almost every summer weekend. Rafting is restricted to a maximum of three boats, and anchoring is allowed within a marked area just south of the osprey pole and the head of Tashmoo. A large sign on the osprey pole informs boaters of these restrictions. The harbor and shellfish departments work hard to enforce the rules, particularly on busy weekend days. I would encourage anyone who witnesses violations to contact the harbor office.
Everyone I am sure fully
Eric Poehler Vineyard HavenEveryone I am sure fully appreciates all the work performed by all the committees and our hard-working town employees. The problem is an existing problem which requires more enforcement which may mean an additional summer employee to enforce existing regulations on Lake Tashmoo for seven days a week. I should have been clear in my prior posting.
Well I don't have a vested
EH EdgartownWell I don't have a vested interest in Lake Tashmoo, but I am involved in the Island seasonal marine industry. I think you you are on the right track, just look at he other island harbors that only allow use of town moorings and unregulated anchoring is not allowed. Without some kind of regulation it can become a bit chaotic.
EH is on the right track. It
Daveb OBEH is on the right track. It is common where anchoring has become a problem in sensitive areas, government agencies have installed moorings and prohibited anchoring. Once to moorings and legal rafting fills up, the are is closed. Generally there is a large penalty for anchoring in areas of eel grass or coral or whatever is being protected.
