Cape Air has discontinued off-season flights between Hyannis and the Island due to low demand, the Hyannis-based airline announced Monday.

The change is effective Oct. 22.

“The passenger numbers just aren’t there to sustain a business,” said Michelle Haynes, spokesperson for Cape Air. “For us to continue offering the service that the passengers were just simply not signing up to fly . . . didn’t make good business sense.

The Creative Economy Speaker Series opens Tuesday, Oct. 1, with Lyz Crane of ArtPlace, which is a collaboration of national and regional foundations and agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts. ArtPlace recently selected Vineyard Haven as one of America’s top small town ArtPlaces.

As the summer season comes to a close, business owners in Oak Bluffs begin to reflect on the season, its successes and failures. And they start to plan for next season.

Representatives of town government and the Oak Bluffs Association have also begun a discussion of the summer’s economic performance.

A months-long dispute between the Oak Bluffs selectmen and a Circuit avenue businessman came to a head this week when the owner of an unbuilt lot at 16 Circuit avenue saw fresh opposition to his latest proposal for a business venture.

It may not be obvious what a garter, a spool of thread, yellow lace, old keys, feathers, antique sheet music and cowry shells all have in common, but once inside Suesan Stovall’s garage-converted art studio, it becomes clear.

Phil Regan always knew he would be an architect. “I liked to draw,” he said. “I had always been in art classes and I liked those classes the most.”

A drafting course at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School was the first crisp, clean line on Mr. Regan’s own career blueprint.

“I knew this was it. I wanted to study architecture,” he said.
