The Family Center is set to begin a year-long book group devoted to helping parents navigate the sometimes magical, sometimes mysterious and sometimes downright messy experience of raising children. Each month, beginning in October, a different book will be chosen to be discussed at weekly meetings held on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the family center.

The first book is entitled The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men. The first meeting is on Oct. 5 when chapters one and two will be discussed.

Behind every bureaucrat beats the heart of an artist. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that were so? Just imagine a world where a moment with CSPAN resulted not in a need for a nap but rather an inspiring journey into the creative (rather than destructive) souls of our elected officials.

Just a crazy dream you say? Well, here on the Vineyard that dream is a reality. Nonbelievers need only to wander the grounds of the Tashmoo Spring building today, Sept. 23, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Dr. Al Hurwitz remembers his first scribble.

“I was about four years old and we moved into a new house. The first thing I saw were all these wonderful white plaster walls. I had a pencil and I began drawing, I can still see the images of what I drew My mother was quite alarmed, but my father thought it was very amusing because it was all doomed to be papered.”

Solar Boxes Emit Sound of Art

Small speakers powered by the sun and emitting a single guitar note are about to add to the ambient sounds of fall this week on Martha’s Vineyard. The project called sun boxes is the work of artist Craig Colorusso, a one-time punk rocker (remember China Pig) turned performance artist.

Nine Eleven: 10 Years Later

Heavy skies drop rain

daily in intermittent waves

this old summer cottage

of ours harbors air eddies

demands the wood stove

current-sucking heater coils

extra layers, sweaters, wool

socks; trees wave remnants

of their storm-seared leaves.

Potted foliage sags its greenery

fallen petals stain the porch floor
