Dancing Through the Ages

Island dancers aged 3 to 75 will be waiting in the wings this weekend at the high school’s Performing Arts Center, where RISE will present their year-end dance performance, called RISE on the Red Carpet. Drawing on award-winning and classic songs, films and plays for content and theme, the performance will feature tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, modern and lyrical dance. Shows are on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m. Cost is $15, or $10 for children under 12. Seating is limited, so get there early.

White Ginger’s annual Trunk Show and Sale on the Island begins today, Friday, June 19, at Beach street extension in Vineyard Haven (next to Tropical Restaurant, across from the Black Dog Tavern).

White Ginger owners Mary Miller and Katherine Young offer items they have chosen on trips to in China alongside their own line of silk clothing, an extensive selection of embroidered tunics, and a range of pieces in cotton. Their luxurious hand-woven silks and cottons mix and match for any occasion, whether as a cover after a swim or a formal evening event.

The Yard’s summer program offers kids six separate week-long workshops, from July 6 to August 14, for children entering kindergarten to eighth grades. Each week will be different, each designed to nourish students’ imaginations while introducing them to basic skills of theater, music, movement, circus, yoga and stage combat (sword flashing, Harry Potter/Star Wars style).

On steamy summer afternoons, the aroma of chocolate fudge, peanut butter fudge or maybe caramel-smothered cashew brittle mingles in the seaside air in downtown Edgartown. It seeps out of 21 North Water street to sweeten the stale sidewalk air cocooning the VTA bus drop-off two blocks westward.

Sunday is Father’s Day, and chances are you will be taking Dad out to dinner (after all, didn’t you take Mom out on Mother’s Day?)

To that end, the backers of the inaugural Martha’s Vineyard Restaurant Week hope they are onto something, because Sunday is the kickoff night for a weeklong event designed to attract hungry diners with interesting menus at reasonable prices.
