Fossil Fred

The Vineyard Haven Public Library presents Connecting with Fossils, an interactive and illustrative talk to be given by Fred Hotchkiss on Tuesday, March 23, beginning at 7 p.m. Connecting with fossils has many dimensions including artistic inspiration and personal wonderment. No prior experience is necessary. Dr. Hotchkiss will bring an assortment of fossils he usually takes to Vineyard classrooms. Feel free to bring fossils of your own for identification.

Doll Club Display

A traveling doll and book exhibit by the Green Mountain Doll Club of Vermont is on display at the Oak Bluffs Public Library. The dolls portray characters from children’s books, fiction and nonfiction. The exhibit will be in the children’s room through March 26.

Author Tony Horwitz will emcee the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore’s open mic night for writers, the final such event of the season, on Tuesday, March 23. Anyone currently working on a novel, short story, poetry or essay is invited to read for five minutes. This is an opportunity for writers to share a selection from a work in progress and for the Vineyard community to come out and hear what their neighbors are working on behind closed doors.

All Dolled Up

A doll making workshop for the benefit of Haitian children will be hosted by Pathways Projects Institutes on Saturday, March 20 at the Chilmark Tavern.

Sally Snipes will lead the group in creating a Waldorf-style cloth doll. Minimal sewing skills are required to make these soft, huggable dolls which will ultimately make their way into the arms of Haitian children. All materials will be supplied and children are welcome to participate if accompanied by an adult.

While Disney saturates the media with ads for its Tim Burton extravaganza Alice in Wonderland, young Island thespians are sending Alice tumbling through a television screen instead of a looking glass, in a play about the absurdity of media-saturated consumer culture, called Alice in Americaland.

Throughout their lives, they have been labeled with various syndromes and conditions. They experience the world in a way that is different from the bulk of society and from each other. But this Saturday, March 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Baptist Church parish house, they will all share one label: they are artists.
