The Edgartown lighthouse, having outlived its mission as a beacon for ships, is on the verge of its next chapter as a town-owned landmark.

Edgartown selectmen signed off Monday on the town’s application to take stewardship of the 1875 lighthouse perched a quarter-mile out in Edgartown harbor.

In May, the town learned that the U.S. General Services Administration, the current owners of the lighthouse, would look for a new owner for the lighthouse, which was deemed no longer critical to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Vineyard Haven man charged with indecent assault and battery on a child has been placed on pretrial probation for the charges.

Daniel Parker, 59, was placed on pretrial probation for 18 months on Dec. 14, and ordered not to contact the alleged victim and his family.

In February 2012, Mr. Parker was arraigned on three charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 for allegedly assaulting a boy, then seven years old.

With the new year come new opportunities on the Vineyard: Cape Cod Community College announced this week that it will begin offering a nursing program on the Island in 2013.

Responding to a need on the Island for more and better-trained health care professionals, the college will offer a program starting in the fall aimed at enabling licensed practical nurses to become registered nurses. Registered nurses are able to perform a wider range of healthcare functions, but need an associate’s degree in nursing.
