Here are a few updates to the annual Martha’s Vineyard Christmas Bird Count that was held on Dec. 28.
Harry Beach and Karen Merlino report that the rufous hummingbird “is doing fine and visited their heated feeder at 6:55 a.m. on Dec. 14.
I have taken down my bird feeders following a recommendation from Brice Boutot, the Edgartown health agent, due to dead birds on the Island testing positive for avian flu.

It is a bit early in the year for shorebirds to show up on their northward migration. It is still February, after all.
