Some dreams come in our sleep, others in the middle of the day, and for those who depend on Martha’s Vineyard Community Services throughout the year, dreams can continue to be realities, thanks to the 32nd annual Possible Dreams auction last night.
For loyal customers, the heart and soul of Oak Bluffs has returned: Lola’s is back in business. On Friday night at 10 p.m., the parking lot was full, the music was playing and friends were dancing, rejoicing in the reopening of the restaurant. It was as if it never left.
“It’s like prohibition is over!” one customer declared. “Our Island is a happy place again,” said another.
Like many fourth graders, Ben Taylor was not a fan of school. But after he graduated from the Steiner School in New York and worked on a biodynamic farm in New Mexico, he began to appreciate and fully understand the Waldorf method of teaching.
To that end, on Wednesday this week Mr. Taylor will perform at the Island Theatre in Oak Bluffs to raise money to support the Plum Hill preschool. Money raised at the event will go to the school’s Together We Build capital campaign to help expand the school’s facilities.

Sam is 47 years old and has been sober for a little over two years, the longest he’s been sober since the age of 10. Brad, 49, became addicted to amphetamines in high school and has been sober for the past two years. Jill was the first graduate from the Vineyard House and is now a nurse’s aid in Maine. These are a few of the life-changing stories that have come as a result of a patient’s time at Vineyard House, and all of these people credit the facility with saving their lives.
When you go to the Farmers’ Market, you trust the food you’re buying because you buy it straight from the farmer. You know where it came from, how it was grown, who picked it, and you are able to ask questions a grocery store clerk might not be able to answer. With the Island Grown Initiative’s (IGI) poultry mobile processing unit, knowing where your food comes from has taken on a new meaning for Vineyarders — they are now able to buy Island-raised chickens in the market.
Have you ever wanted to meet a real-life spy and ask her about the most dangerous situations she’s been in? Maybe you always wanted to drive an Indianapolis 500 race car? Or maybe all you’ve ever wanted is to be able to have a magical pass that gets you on to any beach on the Vineyard? These dreams will become realities for the lucky few on Monday evening as Martha’s Vineyard Community services hosts the 32nd annual Possible Dreams auction.
