A proposed change in the guidelines for the state Community Development Block Grant program could spell a doubly whammy for the Vineyard, which has already lost out on $2 million in block grant money this year due to a clerical error.

The guideline change, which is still proposed and has not been adopted, would restrict communities who receive grant funding from applying for the program the following federal fiscal year.

Anna Edey stooped over one of her many wineberry bushes at her West Tisbury home Saturday afternoon, plucked one of the raspberry-like wild berries and popped it into her mouth.

“What a treat,” she said. “They have no shelf life, so you have to pick them right off the bush.”

A newly-formed Island coalition is working on a possible deal to buy the former Thimble Farm property, take it out of private ownership and make it a nonprofit working farm with housing for farm workers.

Called the Martha’s Vineyard Farm Project, the group hopes to raise $2.5 million to buy the land and buildings at the farm in the Iron Hill area off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road that is home to Whippoorwill Farm, a large community-supported agriculture operation.

Aquinnah selectmen denied a new taxi license application this week, citing a lack of town rules and regulations.

Selectman Spencer Booker said at the selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday he couldn’t approve Jeff Corr’s application because the town has no taxi bylaws.

“I’m looking to work some rules and [regulations] up perhaps similar to other towns before I feel comfortable issuing any more licenses,” he said. “We have no [regulations] in place and we really need to make that happen before we can move forward.”
