Force Backs Dan Rossi as Chief, Selectman Also in the Running

The search for a permanent West Tisbury police chief suddenly turned from straightforward to complicated this week, beginning on Tuesday when selectman Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd, who is also a longtime sergeant on the force, turned up as a name on a list of four finalists recommended by a town search committee. Then two days later, a letter surfaced signed by eight of the nine members of the town police force endorsing acting chief Dan Rossi for the job.

Trustees President Blazes Her Own Trail

Growing up on a ranch in Wyoming, Barbara Erickson received an early education in the importance of open space.

“You get an appreciation for nature that sticks with you,” the newly-appointed president of The Trustees of Reservations said on Friday during a sun-splashed walk through Long Point Reservation in West Tisbury. “Then you come to a place like Massachusetts which is 10 times smaller and I really think it’s a call to action to preserve as much as we can. I think the Trustees has been a trailblazer in that effort.”

Roundabout on the Roundabout As MVC Votes to Review Project

The plan to build a roundabout at the intersection of Barnes and Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Roads will now be reviewed by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission as a development of regional impact (DRI).

The roundabout has been the subject of a decade of planning and a bid is set to go out this fall. But commission members said on Thursday night the project plainly has regional impact, citing potential impacts on the intersections at either end of the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.

The issue drew lively debate Thursday.
