Cronig’s Plans a Power Play With Solar Panels in Parking Lot

Summer shoppers seeking shade may be able to do so this summer while powering up. Vineyard Power hopes to install a 12,200 square foot array of solar panels over the Vineyard Haven Cronig’s parking lot. The array, which will supply a quarter of the store’s energy needs, is made up of three “solar canopies,” which will also feature six electric car charging stations.

Imagine a house somewhere on the Island; on the outside it looks just like other homes in the neighborhood, but inside is a different story. A sea of food containers covers the kitchen floor. Empty cereal boxes neatly line the oven. In the garage the only indication of a car is a rusted decal peering out from beneath a mountain of boxes. In the living room a waist-high pile of newspapers dating back three decades looms above a panorama of detritus and endless more unmarked cardboard boxes.

A member of the Air Force home on leave has a police officer from the Vineyard to thank for being alive to enjoy this holiday season. On Sunday morning at 3 a.m. Island native and former Oak Bluffs police officer Ryan Lehman pulled Cameron Kaufman from his burning car in Raymond, N.H., with only seconds to spare before the vehicle was swallowed up by the blaze.

Mr. Kaufman is 20 and a resident of Bedford, N.H.

The Field Gallery’s shapely alabaster lawn figures may in the future be dancing for new owners. Tim and Eileen Maley announced at the West Tisbury selectmen’s meeting on Wednesday that they are in talks to sell the landmark gallery and sculpture garden to the town. The sale would ensure the gallery remains in operation while offering a possible solution to parking problems associated with plans to expand the West Tisbury Free Library next door.

In the weeks since the Martha’s Vineyard Commission passed temporary wind turbine regulations requiring any machine over 150 feet to come before the commission for review, two building permits in Chilmark have been approved for turbines that fall just inches short of the new requirement.

In the coming months the owners of the Allen Farm on South Road plan to build a turbine that is 149 and a half feet tall.
