Cronig’s Plans a Power Play With Solar Panels in Parking Lot

Summer shoppers seeking shade may be able to do so this summer while powering up. Vineyard Power hopes to install a 12,200 square foot array of solar panels over the Vineyard Haven Cronig’s parking lot. The array, which will supply a quarter of the store’s energy needs, is made up of three “solar canopies,” which will also feature six electric car charging stations.

Unsightly trash along the West Tisbury-Edgartown Road has become a problem and West Tisbury police chief Dan Rossi intends to stop it.

“I have to go down that road to go home and it’s irritating,” he said at Wednesday’s meeting of the West Tisbury selectmen.

The problem was brought to the attention of the town by Arnold Fischer, the owner of Flat Point Farm.

As the Oak Bluffs selectmen grilled candidates for permanent town administrator Tuesday, one of the three hopefuls was not quite as apprehensive as the other two.

“Maybe I’m mellowing out in my old age,” said Robert Whritenour, “I seem to be leaving my stress behind on the boat.”

Mr. Whritenour has served as interim town administrator since July, during which time he has become a respected figure in Oak Bluffs. The selectmen, at the outset, acknowledged the slightly unusual nature of the proceedings.

Weathermen are not the only ones confused by this year’s unseasonably warm winter weather. Off the Cape and Islands, this winter more than 100 sea turtles, tempted to linger in the balmy waters, have met a cold and sandy end.

“This year I’ve seen more turtle strandings than I’ve ever seen in my 12 years here,” Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary director Suzan Bellincampi said on Thursday.

Tisbury selectmen joined the chorus calling for cable television service to Chappaquiddick on Tuesday, voting to pull out of the Islandwide contract talks with Comcast.

“With Edgartown pulling out because of the Chappaquiddick piece not being addressed, I’d like us to send our marching orders to our representative [Fred LaPiana] to stop talks as well,” said selectman Jeffrey Kristal.

Gary Harcourt is a cabinetmaker by trade. He still views his work installing wind turbines as a side gig, albeit one that has brought him around the world, hoisting turbines over potato farms in the English countryside and working on test rigs in Vancouver. In November Mr. Harcourt raised his 50th turbine at the Allen Farm in Chilmark. It was the 12th turbine raised on-Island by Great Rock Windpower, the company founded by Mr. Harcourt along with Larry Schubert and Mr. Harcourt’s wife, Kathryn.
