Gazette Editorial Misses Mark

I am writing to respond to last week’s Gazette editorial which faulted Cape Wind for filing a petition with the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board for relief from a denial of the Cape Cod Commission.

Cape Wind worked with the commission for six years. During that time the commission was provided with more information about the portions of the project in their jurisdiction (the transmission cables) than any regulatory body in Massachusetts has ever been provided for any proposed cable project.

In an op-ed that appeared in this newspaper last week Timothy Holmes strangely stated: “The promoters and supporters of the Cape Wind project are about to perform the equivalent of loading 34,000 General Motors 2005 Hummers into Nantucket Sound.”

A recent Vineyard Gazette article reported a legal challenge by the Cape Cod Commission to the certificate of environmental impact and public interest issued to Cape Wind by the unanimous vote of the Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB).

In a recent piece published in this newspaper, Glenn Wattley made misleading statements about wind power and Cape Wind that I would like to address. Mr. Wattley is chief executive officer of the organization that formed solely to oppose Cape Wind, he has a background working in the coal industry, and he incorrectly argues that wind cannot help reduce our use of oil.
