Uncover the Beast Buried in Barrett Report

An open letter to Sens. John Kerry and Edward M. Kennedy:

As a journalist, voter, part-time Vineyarder and full-time Democrat, I’m writing to urge you to produce the removed 120 pages of The Barrett Report before they foment a ruinous political scandal.

Folksinger, storyteller and all-around funny guy Rabbi David Shneyer gave a coffeehouse performance Monday evening at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. Fingerpicking his Guild guitar, accompanying his tunes on harmonica too, donning different hats — literally a cowboy hat or yarmulke or Greek sailor’s cap as the song demanded — the rabbi demonstrated for Islanders just how he has drawn a following within and well beyond the Jewish community.

When students show up at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School next September, some will go to sea.

For the first time, the school is offering maritime courses. Students will be able to enroll in elective classes that teach boat handling, navigation and even knot-tying.

The newly created maritime studies program at the high school is a collaborative effort between a number of different organizations.

Two baby owls, only a few days old, believed to be the only owls ever born in captivity on the Island, are doing well on the counter top of Gus Ben David’s kitchen in Edgartown.

The little fuzzy creatures, not much heavier than a pile of feathers, are eating well and gaining weight.

For now, they are living in an eight-inch square box slightly bigger than a shoe box. The box sits on a heating pad set between 84 and 87 degrees.

The best time to catch fish during tomorrow morning’s trout tournament is early, at its beginning.

The 34th annual Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club’s trout tournament is free for youngsters 14 years of age and younger. As many as 200 youngsters are expected to show up to the shores of Duarte’s Pond, off Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury.

The tournament starts early, before sunrise, and concludes at 10 a.m.

Scots around the world paid tribute to the birthday of the poet Robert Burns through dinners and toasts in what is widely known as the Burns Supper. Vineyard Scots and their friends had their own event Saturday night at the Oyster Bar and Grill on Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs.

The evening of toasts, music and levity honored the significance of both the 249th birthday of the bard and the 21st anniversary of the Scottish Society of Martha’s Vineyard.
