Holy Ghost Feast Honors Heritage of Portuguese

Two days of celebration begin tomorrow in the annual Feast of the Holy Ghost. Islanders of Portuguese heritage and their friends will party, dine and parade in a festival whose traditions date back more than half a century.

"This is our heritage," said Bobbie Ann Gibson of Oak Bluffs, president of the Holy Ghost Association.

At Morning Glory Farm, the strawberries are gone and the peas are in. The farm hands are filling baskets with beets, carrots and scallions. And the potatoes are doing well.

Dan Athearn of Morning Glory Farm was busy on Saturday morning moving lettuce onto his stand at the West Tisbury Farmers' Market. His father, Jim, was not far away.

A 22-year-old inmate at the Edgartown House of Correction will be arraigned on Thursday on three charges of escape. David Luce, who was captured by local police after he was discovered missing from the jail on Saturday, May 4, has also been charged with possession of counterfeit $10 bills.

This Fourth of July parade was clearly the biggest. Last night's fireworks were vivid and colorful. And those words can also be used to describe a parade that was so large that it took nearly two hours to run its course.

Edgartown fire chief Tony Bettencourt said: "It was absolutely the largest. It was incredible."
