Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

In a town well-known for lengthy and often emotional town meetings, the special town meeting in Oak Bluffs on Tuesday was an anomaly, as voters quickly and quietly approved a wide range of articles including two separate requests for engineering studies of the town waterfront.

Attorneys for the Oak Bluffs resident who illegally built a three-story garage along the North Bluff three years ago have sued the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

Attorneys for Joseph G. Moujabber filed a complaint in Dukes County Superior Court on Nov. 16 challenging the commission’s unanimous decision last month to review the controversial garage project — dubbed Garage Mahal by some critics — as a development of regional impact (DRI).

Oak Bluffs voters on Tuesday will decide whether to commit the town to an ambitious plan to radically overhaul the town waterfront and whether to adopt a new policy of paying all town employees based on a uniform pay scale.

Voters will consider 17 warrant articles at the special town meeting at 7 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs School. Moderator David Richardson will preside over the session.

Oak Bluffs police last Friday broke up a party on Grovedale Road attended by more than a dozen underage guests and charged the host with illegally providing alcohol to minors.

Matthew P. Lyons, 24, was charged with selling or delivering liquor to a person under the age of 21. He was arraigned in Edgartown District Court on Monday and released on $100 bail.
