Years ago, when Lisa Sherman took a part-time summer job at the Edgartown Library shelving books, she did not anticipate how this short break from her harried New York city lifestyle would play a large part in her future. This past fall, more than a decade later, Ms. Sherman became the head librarian at the Aquinnah Public Library. But we are getting ahead of the story.

On the Vineyard where art galleries abound and artists abound even more, there is, it seems, art everywhere. But it’s not just traditional galleries that showcase art. Venturing off the tracks, one can encounter not only art that enchants but artists who do so as well.

This month the work of Chris Hughes is being highlighted at Mocha Mott’s in Vineyard Haven and the work of Edie Yoder at the Chilmark Library.

As Laura Wainwright distinguishes in the titular essay of her new book Home Bird: Four Seasons on Martha’s Vineyard, a home bird is different from a homebody. Unlike a homebody, who does not like leaving home, a home bird very much enjoys going out and traveling, but simply finds “special delight in the comfort, nourishment and complexity of our lives at home.”

But Ms. Wainwright also views her home as not merely her house on Lambert’s Cove where she lives with her husband and dogs, but the entirety of Martha’s Vineyard.

We’ve all been there. Too much stuff — in our homes, cars, schedules, as well as in our bodies and minds! As I write this, I’m looking around at various stacks and piles to be sorted and processed. No surprise that the flyer telling of an upcoming workshop on organizing and decluttering caught my eye (and my heart). We talk about and yearn for a simpler way of life, and yet it’s right there within our grasp.

Just ask Noreen Baker, a professional organizer.

You might not know that the unassuming, one-story, little building that sits next to the regional high school houses greatness. But it does. Eight women discovered this recently by enrolling in the Telling Your Story Digital Workshop through Adult and Community Education of Martha’s Vineyard (ACEMV).
