Steamship Authority Weathers Changes Through Long Year

As 2004 got under way at the Steamship Authority, there was some question about whether there would be a Steamship Authority in the future.

In mid-January Nantucket governor Grace Grossman confirmed that she had been exploring since the previous summer whether that island should secede from the boat line, an entity created by the state in 1960 to ensure reliable, affordable ferry travel between Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the mainland.

 

 

 

Visiting Nurse Services Explore Merger Into a Single Agency

The Vineyard's two major visiting nurse services are in talks about a potential merger, the Gazette has learned.

Representatives from the Visiting Nurse Service, which is part of Martha's Vineyard Community Services, and the Vineyard Nursing Association Inc. are contemplating whether to combine the entities.

Blue Heron Farm, the sprawling gentleman's farm overlooking Tiah's Cove in Chilmark and West Tisbury that was the former residence of the late M. Anthony (Tony) Fisher and his wife Anne, was sold last week to a Mississippi couple for $20.35 million.

The buyers are William and Mollie Van Devender of Jackson, Miss.

Frank Words Punctuate County Discussion

A planned goal-setting session for the Dukes County Commission was interrupted abruptly this week when county commissioner Leonard Jason Jr. of Chilmark questioned whether the county would even continue to exist.

"The first thing you've got to do is determine if there will be county government," Mr. Jason declared at the regular county commission meeting Wednesday night.
