From the gleaming russet wood of pint-sized instruments, to the shining buckles on children’s dress shoes, to the carefully-practiced notes of the Hallelujah Chorus, Thursday night’s All-Island Winter Strings Concert was full of polish. A free flu shot clinic hosted last Sunday by the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Vineyard Nursing Association and Island boards of health was called a success by town officials and health care workers.

“We will be less sick as a little population because of this effort, and I wanted to commend the collaboration,” Cynthia Mitchell, West Tisbury selectman and executive at Island Health Clinic, said at the town selectmen’s meeting this week.

Both basketball squads need just one more win to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament. Meanwhile, the fledgling swim team, hampered by illness and injury, hosted Sacred Heart in a close meet on Monday, but ultimately came up short.

Edgartown health agent Matthew Poole told the Gazette Monday morning that high turnout was expected, but organizers nevertheless ran out of the vaccine at 11:45 a.m. The clinic opened at 9 and was scheduled to go until 2 p.m.
