Two Vineyard Educators Proposed as Candidates for Interim School Post

At the behest of the all-Island school committee, a group of top school administrators, yesterday recommended two of their own for consideration as interim superintendent of Vineyard schools.

 

 

 

Words and emotions filled the air Monday night, when some 350 people packed the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center to air their views about the controversial Cape Wind project planned for Nantucket Sound.

Opinion split nearly straight down the middle among the 50-plus people who spoke at the public hearing, from local fishermen to high school students to powerful politicians. All spoke with passion and conviction.

Corps Hearings Begin Monday on Nantucket Sound Wind Farm

Vineyard residents who want to weigh in on the controversial wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound will have their best chance when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its entourage arrive on-Island Monday for the first of four regional public hearings.

The Vineyard hearing will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center. Registration for those who want to speak begins at 5 p.m.

West Tisbury and Chilmark Selectmen Collide Over Up-Island School Study

West Tisbury and Chilmark selectmen knocked heads this week over whether a task force studying the Up-Island Regional School District should consider closing the Chilmark School.

The dispute could end the task force study before it even begins, and ultimately unravel the entire regional district, whose future is now in question.

Mississippi Shipyard Bid Comes in at $31.4 Million for New Vineyard Ferry

Steamship Authority engineers opened bids for the Islander replacement ferry on Wednesday and found that the lowest qualifying bid was $31.4 million - 25 per cent higher than their top estimate.

SSA management had projected that the new ferry would cost between $22 million and $25 million. This week the actual price tag climbed to at least $31.4 million, as bid by the VT Halter Marine shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.

West Tisbury Town Hall Wins Makeover

When Sandy Fisher walks into the West Tisbury town hall, she says the ladies' room smells exactly like it did when she went to school there about 40 years ago.

"It's probably the original mold," she said this week.

Sometime soon, however, the bathrooms will begin to smell different, as the 134-year-old building is set for a dramatic $3.7 million makeover.
