John T. Hughes joined a distinguished team of ocean scientists from around the world for a trip to the once-closed nation of China. His passport was his career here on the Island, as a leading biologist studying Homarus americanus — the American lobster. His expertise is unequalled and often sought out by those interested in the raising of lobsters. Mr. Hughes built and has managed the state lobster hatchery in Oak Bluffs since its inception in 1949.

May is here again with bird song and budding leaves. The month in Vineyard history has its unique significance, for it was on the 24th of May in the year 1602 that Bartholomew Gosnold in his “small barke” named Concord doubled a cape which he and his men called Dover Cliff on account of its great white outcroppings, later identified as Gay Head.

Almost everyone is familiar with the famed definition of news, that it isn’t news if a dog bites a man, but it is if a man bites a dog. But right here on the Island there is a new definition. A story has broken that should flash over all wires: a man has bitten a cow!
