Island Charter School Honors Six Seniors

A Chinese proverb, a willow tree and a piece by Handel were all part of the festivities last Saturday as the Martha's Vineyard Public Charter School community celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2005.

 

 

 

Her camp is the longest running, volunteer-operated overnight camp in the United States for children and adults with disabilities. Helen Lamb founded Camp Jabberwocky over 50 years ago on an impulse to do something good, and she did it, as she does all things, in a way that was pragmatic, efficient and sustainable.

The internet may have been designed for scientists to collaborate across vast distances, but it has since become all things to all people. Accessing seemingly infinite information and instant communication across the globe are still the main uses of the Web, but there’s a new trend swiftly becoming standard online practice: social networking. This is about creating a personal presence in cyberspace.

The grass parking lot of the West Tisbury Fire Station was filled with some classic Vineyard vehicles — Volvo wagons, small pickups and of course, Subarus. Some cars were left running, stereos sending reggae music wafting through the stiff April winds. The bleachers were crowded with Islanders young and old, braving the sunny but chilly day to witness the first annual Island kickball classic.

Animation has come a long way from Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willy, the black and white prototype that later became the world’s most famous mouse. The immense popularity of television shows like the Simpsons has demonstrated that cartoons aren’t just for kids any more, while advances in computer generated graphics have introduced a stunning new standard for big screen visuals. The nominees for the Animated Short Films category at the 2009 Oscar awards represent the very best work the world has to offer, in an industry that is fast approaching a golden age.
