Tap the Yard: A Vineyard Festival of Rhythm and Beats has returned to the Yard in Chilmark for the third year. The two-week festival features some of the best dancers in the country working in progressive tap and dance.

On Saturday, for the tenth year in a row, a group of readers took turns reciting Frederick Douglass' speech The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro. “It’s important for people to remember the impact of slavery because it’s not only a part of our history, but it’s a part of our present,” said Makani Themba, the organizer of the reading.

Kids First! Film Critics Boot Camp, a nonprofit children’s media advocacy organization, creates camps and film festivals all over the country and starts its first Vineyard camp at the film center in a few weeks.

A celebration of artists old and new was held at the Old Sculpin Gallery last Sunday. Teachers, parents and friends honored the three winners of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association Student Scholarship given each year to graduating seniors: Zac Wannamaker, Willoe Maynard and David DaSilva. The gallery was also dedicated to Fred Messersmith, an artist who had a large and personal impact on the MVAA, and was its director for 10 years.

A bit of New Orleans has popped up at 11 North Summer street in Edgartown. The music spilling out onto the sidewalk is the first hint of something different. The artwork takes it from there.

The new gallery displays the work of Chris Roberts-Antieau, a New Orleansbased artist and forward thinker who has decided to set up shop on the Island for the first time with a temporary gallery.
