"I think that any religious significance that might have been attached to the holiday is so completely downed by commercialism. People go broke putting lights up and vie with each other for who has the best display. If it were a toss up between having lights or having more social services, I would opt for more social services."

Despite whatever contentious spirits might occasionally lurk about, this weekend once again proves the Vineyard is the kind of place where things that go bump in the night are usually giggling, and children who dart around in the dark and cluster at their neighbors' doors are there to receive smiles and sweets.

The search continues this morning in Oak Bluffs harbor for the whereabouts of Michael F. Landfear, 54, of Falmouth.

Mr. Landfear was last seen Tuesday night heading out on a small rowing pram to a boat moored in the harbor. U.S. Coast Guard, state and local police, together with public safety volunteers from three Island towns searched all day yesterday without result.
