Children Meet Racism on Tisbury Side Street

Two young girls from New Jersey got their first exposure to overt racism this week when they returned from a morning walk into downtown Vineyard Haven and found a racial slur spray-painted in letters two feet tall in the street by the house their family was renting at Clough Lane and Pine street.

Tisbury police are investigating the vandalism that happened Wednesday — possibly in broad daylight — and police chief John McCarthy is looking into whether the incident should be considered a hate crime.

 

 

 

Bad Weather Brings Mixed Prognosis for Tick-Borne Illnesses

Donna Enos, the infection control nurse at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital, will tell you that the combination of rain and cool temperatures have kept many people indoors, significantly reducing their risk of a tick bite.

The phones have stopped ringing, and the yard signs are down. In Oak Bluffs this week, there is a weary sense of relief that the town finally has its answer: They will remain in the Martha's Vineyard Commission.

SSA Planning to Enforce Its Policy on Late Arrivals

Steamship Authority officials plan to clamp down later this summer on a policy that would force last-minute drivers with reservations to change their habits, or risk getting bumped into standby.

With the advent of new electronic ticket scanners, SSA managers said they hope to enforce the policy written in fine print on the backside of tickets, requiring drivers to arrive 30 minutes before the boat departure.
