Fishing Sunday morning with his father, Mark Bergeron, at the annual Kids' Derby on the Steamship Authority wharf in Oak Bluffs, the nine-year-old angler hooked a large dogfish that locked him in an intense eight-minute battle. But the pratfalls of pier fishing cost the young fisherman his catch.

Special Town Meeting Set in Chilmark

Harbor repairs, health insurance for firefighters, extending the town building cap and a plan to lease out town property for a community swimming pool will all come before Chilmark voters at a special town meeting Monday night.

Set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Chilmark Community Center, the warrant includes 10 articles. Moderator Everett Poole will preside over the special session.

Emergency Responders Report Moped Accidents Down Again

Moped accidents were down again on the Vineyard this summer, and emergency responders cite better public safety education as a possible factor.

Preliminary numbers compiled by the four ambulance departments on the Island show that the departments responded to an average number of calls during the summer months, with a slight increase in the down-Island departments.

But across the board the number of moped accidents saw a significant drop.
