Island Harley Riders Make Season Bright

By ALLEN GREEN

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon in early November, but there, already, was Santa — and riding a motorcycle, too. What’s more, behind him was a line of about 60 more riders, all ready to criss-cross the Island and pick up toys and donations for the neediest kids here. The group was the Martha’s Vineyard Harley Riders, and last Sunday marked their annual Red Stocking tour around the Island.

To most Islanders, the name Denys Wortman is most familiar as that of the former Tisbury selectman. But before that Wortman, there was another Denys Wortman, the painter-turned-cartoonist whose work could be found six days a week for more than 30 years in the pages of New York’s World-Telegram and Sun (and syndicated widely in other papers).
