The Gazette library seems to have files on any topic. Some are slim (Finnish prefabs, for example). Others are so fat they have spilled over into second and third envelopes. The Red Stocking file is just such a case. The envelopes are thick with clippings and creased from use. They have surprising weight in the palm of the hand.

At the other end of the year from the sleek summer fundraising season, a grassroots charity pursues its purpose.

The Red Stocking Fund holds no auctions or celebrity fundraisers. It has no board of directors, and its managers bear no administrative titles. The core group of volunteers meets only once a year to set the date - this year, Dec. 19 - on which strained and straitened parents will receive the Island's gifts for more than 270 of its children.

For the fourth time in five years, Vineyard football is set to play for the state title. After defeating East Boston 17-12 in this week's playoff contest, the Vineyarders now will face Manchester Essex in Saturday's Division VI Super Bowl.

Sweet Revenge: Vineyarders Recapture Cup

After winning the 26th annual Island Cup and clinching the Mayflower Large League title last Saturday, the Vineyarders now advance to the playoffs, where they will compete for a spot in the Division VI superbowl.

The playoff game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m. at White Stadium in Franklin Park, south of Boston. The Vineyarders will face East Boston, which defeated South Boston 36-16 in a game played yesterday.

At a public hearing on Monday, MassHighway officials told Islanders to expect the temporary drawbridge across Lagoon Pond to stay in place for six years.

Stunned at the prospect, Islanders immediately urged the project engineers to finalize a design for the new drawbridge before beginning construction on a temporary replacement.

Tisbury Prods Captain Douglas on His Right to Vote in Town

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Tisbury board of registrars plans to challenge the residency of one of the town's voters.

At issue is whether Robert S. Douglas, founder of the Black Dog Tavern and captain of the schooner Shenandoah, has the right to vote in Tisbury, by claiming a residence on Beach street extension while actually living in West Tisbury.

Some of the Island's heavy hitters in shellfish and water quality management are warning MassHighway to slow its plans for the construction of a temporary drawbridge across Lagoon Pond.

On Monday they will travel to Boston to ask officials at the state agency to build time into the project schedule for an environmental study.
