Summertime Bounty

I'm a big fan of bad weather. Monday morning's unexpected rain gave me a much-deserved day off.

I realize it is unpopular to want more rain but, honestly, the several days of hot, dry wind just sucked the moisture out of everything including me. Even after last Friday’s lovely shower, the soil was completely dusty a half inch down. I’m hyper-aware of this fact as I am attempting a new vegetable garden where the well has yet to be completed. I have become extremely grateful to turn on the faucet at my own place.

Uncle! I have tried to do too much with this baby boomer body. It is remarkable how many different body parts hurt every morning. I hobble around for a couple hours when, not very long ago, I could hit the ground running. No matter! I’ll rest when I’m dead.

This may have been the most beautiful week in the garden year. The previous week’s rain combined with a sunny weekend brought out leaves and flowers in spades. I was amazed by two ornamental cherry trees in particular — next to Morrice Florist and on the Edgartown Road between Skiff and Cromwell (easily as big as the house). The row in front of the Tisbury School is coming along nicely. I remember when they were planted.
