Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks, located on State Road in West Tisbury, has announced that Maestro Glassblower Davide Fuin, of Murano, Italy, is visiting the State Road class studio this summer.
Mr. Fuin is a lifelong and world-famous glassblower. From July 30 to 31, Mr. Fuin will demonstrate his methods of Venetian glassblowing, making intricate goblets and Veronese vases, as well as creating artwork for his exhibition and opening reception scheduled for August 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Cultural anthropologist and University of Chicago professor Dr. Richard Shweder will deliver a talk titled Some Hazards of Moral Thinking at the Chilmark Public Library on Wednesday, July 29 at 5:30 p.m.
Dr. Shweder, the William Claude Reavis Distinguished Service Professor in the department of comparative human development at the University of Chicago, will discuss the implications of a great moral legend from Orissa, India: Is it permissible to kill one person to save 1,200?
The Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard along with the Boys’ & Girls’ Club, the Island Affordable Housing Fund and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will host its annual, three-day Martha’s Vineyard Antiques Show. The benefit show kicks off on July 30 with a preview party, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., offering an opportunity to see the many wonderful antiques on display, and to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and lots of good company. A concert called Shipwrecks, Pirates and Mermaids, with songs and stories tied to seafaring around the Vineyard, begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 at the Whaling Church in Edgartown.
The event is a fund-raiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Admission is $15, children and seniors $10.
The affordable housing cause got another boost this weekend when the annual Housing on the Tube fundraiser broke its goal of $650,000.
“We exceeded every benchmark that we set out for ourselves this year,” said Island Affordable Housing Fund executive director Patrick Manning. “We have surpassed our goal of $650,000. That was our goal this year, and we were focusing on that in a time where you have an economic downturn around the world.”
Entrain Brings Big Love to Oak Bluffs
Vineyard-born world-rock band Entrain will present Drums for Peace, a theatre production combining elements of a rock concert, an epic drum circle, projected imagery and audience participation at the Tabernacle on Saturday, July 25 at 8 p.m. Bring your clapping hands and dancing feet.
