Johanna Erickson will teach a specialty knitting class at the Tisbury Senior Center on Friday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The class will include knitting novelties, including a leaf, a rose, I Cord vines, made separately and applied to other knitting, such as a hat or purse. All knitters of any age are welcome. Basic knitting knowledge is necessary.
In August Ms. Erikson will teach Beginning Knitting and Refresher on Basics on Fridays, same time and place.
Author and garden historian Judith Taylor will give a talk on the historic and global migration of plants on Wednesday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Polly Hill Arboretum.
Spelling Bee
Island Theatre Workshop opens a new production this weekend at Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. It’s the Tony award-winning comedy and musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, directed by Taffy McCarthy and Linda Berg. This fun, high-energy show opened last night and continues through August 8.
Firemen’s Car Show
The fourth annual Tisbury volunteer fire department car show will be held on July 24 at Boch Park, directly across from the Xtra Mart on Beach Road in Vineyard Haven.
The fun begins at 4 p.m. with a variety of special interest cars — and for the first time this year motorcycles — followed by live music and a pig roast. No alcohol will be allowed at this family-friendly event.
Library Book Drive
Thanks to a wildly successful book drive, the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs will offer a wide variety of quality used books in all categories, for all ages, at bargain prices all weekend. Hours begins today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and continue Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday noon to 2 p.m. at the library.
Kathryn Aaron, an established interpreter of 16th and 17th century music, will perform at Trinity Episcopal Church in Oak Bluffs, on Sunday, July 25, accompanied by Trinity organist Wesley Brown.
A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Ms. Aaron is studying for her master’s degree at Yale’s Institute of Sacred Music. She has performed internationally and is a member of the choir of Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport, Conn.
