Tom Dunlop will speak about his new book Schooner: Building a Wooden Boat on Martha’s Vineyard at the Chilmark Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m.

Cruising World, in its June 2010 issue wrote: “It was the most festive launch in more than a generation: the christening of Rebecca of Vineyard Haven, a 60-foot, 76,000-pound schooner designed and built, plank on frame, at the Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway, one of the leading traditional boatbuilding yards on the U.S. continent.

Lola’s may have arrived late to this summer, but the re-opened Oak Bluffs dining establishment will dance its way out of this hot summer with what’s billed as nothing less than a Labor Day End of Season Blow-Out Pajama Party Buffet.

Admission is $20 on Monday night, Sept. 6. The party featuring deejay Steve starts at 9 p.m., and it’s bring your own pj’s and dancing shoes.

On Sept. 12 Nectar’s will host a Wintertide Coffeehouse Reunion Concert featuring popular New York singer-songwriter Dayna Kurtz and Island artists Jemima James, Dan Waters, Kim Hilliard and Kevin Keady.

Wintertide was a mainstay on the Vineyard for many years, and was recognized by Billboard as one of the top performing arts centers in the nation. It also provided entertainment for teens when there were no other options on the Island.

Hotdog Days of Summer

Libraries usually wear a cloak of quiet contemplation. Perhaps there’s some rambunctiousness at story hour toddlers are not known for their decorum but in general they are studious places meant for finding and reading that particular book.

But this Monday, Sept. 6, the Edgartown Library is putting away the shusher and road tripping it out to Katama Airport for a rocking evening of hotdogs, music, climbing walls and airplane acrobatics.

The toughest competition the Let’s Move Martha’s Vineyard community kickoff festival faced this past week may have been the weather. A three-day northeaster forced event organizers to reschedule the festival for a date four days later. The new date, Saturday, dawned bright and sunny — perfect for going to the beach.

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, Nanucket’s award-winning author Connor Gifford will be on the Vineyard to speak before the 300 teachers of the Martha’s Vineyard school system at the invitation of assistant superintendent Laurie Halt.

Mr. Gifford also will be at Edgartown Books on Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. to sign his hit book, America According to Connor Gifford, with co-author Victora Harris.
