The sight of an old barn, a beacon of red in the midst of a green and yellow field, not unlike that of a lighthouse, often brings up visions of the past, and a more idyllic time when cows owned the earth and people, well, just milked them.

Artist Richard Dunbrack sees furniture.

Using recycled materials from old barns and antique oddities that have fallen from grace (he does not pillage), Mr. Dunbrack fashions whimsical yet functional furniture. Art you can take a nap in, if you will.

The Martha’s Vineyard Institute for Creative Writing has begun its summer program of workshops for writers. As a bonus for those of us who have not signed up for workshops, the institute will be holding fiction and poetry readings throughout the next month at various locations around the Island.

But tonight, July 12, from 5 to 6 p.m. the head honcho, creative mastermind and wordsmith in his right, Alexander Weinstein, the director of the program, will be reading at the charter school in West Tisbury.

For musician Ben Taylor, the Hot Tin Roof legacy is an unfinished song. The lyrics tell a story — since 1979 so many rock and roll, blues, funk, hip-hop, bluegrass, and folk greats have walked through the doors of the Vineyard nightclub at the airport.

Now Mr. Taylor and the current owners of the nightclub, which is now named Nectar’s, say there is one more verse to write.
